Only about a year or so ago I had a Reiki session, and I thought this is a great thing to do alongside what I do already. I have been able to blend it into my sessions and help my clients have additional healing support in the sessions. Some of you might already have tried Reiki, but for some of you, it might be something you have never heard of. So firstly, let’s just have a look at what it is.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, that also promotes healing. It is administered in two ways; it can be used as I do, remotely, or it can be done with the laying of hands. It is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. This is the same basis for many eastern-based complementary therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, kinesiology, and shiatsu, to name just a few of them. If your life force energy is low or out of balance then you are more likely to get sick or feel stressed. If we have a balanced life force, with a high level of energy, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the
Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So, Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Which is why it is great for me to be sending you this relaxing energy while you are having a hypnosis session or EMDR session. Lots of my clients have noticed the extra difference with using Reiki, which is great. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping many different issues and promoting a positive beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to enjoy the benefits of Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others.

Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing in the early 20th century, recommended that one should practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures. I love his philosophy about life and how he looked at life and health in general. During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Mikao Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Mikao Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realise that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. For the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself for it to be a complete system. Which is just how I see things in my practice. It is not just me helping you, it is a teamwork where we work together to help you make changes. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life, and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value. Mikao saw it as a secret art of inviting happiness and affecting a great treatment for mind, body, and spirit.
Here is an affirmation Mikao developed:
“Just for today, do not anger.
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude.
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart,
and chant these words with your mouth.”
(Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind. The founder, Mikao Usui).

Why not try some of these philosophies and add this lovely affirmation to your daily routine? If we all lived this way, I do think we would be living in a much happier world. You might find that starting the day this way is a great way to be a better person and bring calm, health and happiness into your life. If you bring this into your bedtime routine, it can help you to sleep better. It only takes a couple of minutes, just give it a go. Sara.
