Listen to me

Watch me

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at building your confidence, if you have just dived into this blog then it would be worth checking out the last few blogs to help you more with your confidence.  With the last blog ripple, we looked at the ripple effect that being confident can have and this effect can all be seen with a happy attitude too. Smiling is such a lovely thing to do, and is something that we can add to boost our confidence as well. Smiling is often a show of outer confidence, I am sure, at one time or another, you have seen someone who is painfully shy. These people can hardly look at you let alone smile and even making eye contact can be an issue for people with extreme confidence issues. If this is you maybe finding someone like myself to help start the ball rolling in building confidence would be a good first step. If you’re on your way to being that more safe, secure and confident person then adding more smiling into your life is a definite must.  Smiling is such a fabulous gift we can all give to ourselves and everyone else we come across in our lives.

How great does it feel to smile, take a bit of time and remember when you last smiled and how it felt, if it wasn’t in the last 24 hours then you definitely need to get into more smiling. Now that you have thought about how it feels to smile; I am sure you are now aware of just how much better we feel when we do smile.  Also just think about how it feels to send these smiles out to all those people, you’re going to be gifting your happy vibes too.  The next benefit you’re going to get is that it is going to help build your confidence too, taking that time to smile could be an opening to start a conversation.  A smile is a real ice breaker with people and can often spark people to speak to you, again don’t just take my word for it start doing this and you will see for yourselves how this works. By smiling you’re showing an open side to yourself and if we’re open then people will feel that then can get a bit closer to you with some conversation. Another thing that happens is, is that you have given them something, your lovely smile and lots of people feel the pull to return something back to you.  This can enable you to expand your comfort zones, chat to more people and be more proactive in developing your confidence.

Life is something we should grasp with both hands and everyday should be a day to celebrate with lots of positive vibes. Smiling is a great way to do this, I read this poem years ago and thought how lovely it was and will share it with you today.

Smiling is contagious
You can catch it like the flu
When someone smiled at me today
I started smiling too.

I pasted around the corner
And someone saw my grin
And when he smiled I realised
That I’d passed it on to him

I thought about that smile
Then I realised it’s worth
A single smile just like mine
It could travel round the earth

So if you feel a smile begin
Don’t leave it undetected
Lets start an epidemic QUICK
And get the world infected.

It’s such a lovely and very true analogy of a positive epidemic, today you can be the one that starts a new epidemic and every day moving forward you can create new ones too.  Someone needs to be the one that starts this epidemic and let this be you, head out into you day with this poem in your mind and look for the opportunities to create smiling epidemics. Over time this bright mood that is created by doing will become the true nature of who you are. Habits are always forming and now it’s time to enhance yourself to that next level. Of course, like any habit it takes time to form, we need a goal, a plan and things to remind and motivate us to do this.  With it being a few weeks away from Christmas maybe you could use Christmas as your goal to create a smiling epidemic everyday between now and then. No more Christmas grinch behaviour for you, its smiling all the way and every day you can let this positive habit grow. There are so many opportunities to smile, give yourself a competition on certain days to see just how many smiles you can fit into one day. You might find that people start to follow your lead and the people around you are smiling more and seem happier, even if they haven’t signed up for your Christmas smiling epidemic.  Remember it is catching, so this can easily happen.  Other days you can challenge yourself to smile at people you don’t know that well, the guy in the shop, the postman, the new neighbour, the people waiting in the lunch queue.  Also, one day you can count how many smiles you get back in return, keep mixing things up this will keep your smiling epidemic more alive and you will enjoy the challenge more by doing this.

Just remember even if you only get one smile back then you have made one person’s day so much happier. That’s a great feeling to make someone happier but I think you’ll find it will be much more than just the one person you can get a smile back from. Start today and make the epidemic of smiling grow and in turn you’ll be boosting your confidence and maybe you will be a person that smiles more in the future too.
